Get book recommendations

June 5, 2020 

Now that the Library has Curbiside Service, we want to get great books into your hands!

Picture Books: You can request a Picture Book Pack and choose from among 16 categories of picture books, like animals or nature or Librarian favorites. Librarians will hand-select three picture books from each for you to pick up curbside.

Chapter books: Kids looking for transitional chapter books, email the Children's Librarian at children@cityofmillvalley.org and tell us a few books that you've read and liked. We can recommend three new books for you!

Personalized Reading Lists for grades 4 and up: If you're in fourth grade or higher, you can get a Personalized Reading List with five books we think you'll love. Click here for more information.

Free Coronavirus Book for Children

Alex Scheffler, illustrator of The Gruffalo and many more picture books, as helped create an informative and easy-to-read digital book about coronaviruses and COVID-19. You can download it now, for free, and use it to help talk to your children about what's going on during this crisis.

For preschoolers through kids in upper elementary grades, this is an excellent resource on what we know, what we should be doing, and how we can help. With a diverse cast, Alex Scheffler's signature style helps present the information in a clear and calm manner, while never downplaying its seriousness. This is well-worth a read.

Sensory Storytime

Sensory storytime offers a small-group, inclusive setting for children of all abilities, including those with special needs, autism, or other developmental needs. The series is free and aimed at children 5 years and younger. Siblings welcome.

Sing a Story with the San Francisco Opera

Bubblesmith Sterling Johnson

Bubble artist Sterling Johnson brings his amazing show indoors for this fun family event. He has performed versions of his remarkable hand-blown bubbles for over 45 years and is the only person to ever put a bubble inside a bubble inside a bubble on stage without any tubes or straws!

Silly Goose & Val present A Gentle Halloween

Families will laugh and sing, hoot and holler with Silly Goose and her human friend Val. From songs like “Halloween,” that deals with friends wearing masks and pretending to be frightening, to “Ghostie Pie,” about the ghost who is afraid of Halloween, children will walk, jump, hop to the Haunted House; dance with skeletons, witches, pumpkins, and goblins; and help one little ghost learn who to boo!

Ventriloquist and musician Val Smalkin is a Parents’ Choice Award Winner for her CD, A Gentle Halloween. She was inspired to write the music for children who might be frightened by this rather odd holiday.

Forget about your worries and your strife and bring the whole family to watch this classic 1967 animated film. Popcorn and refreshments will be available.

In this classic Walt Disney animation based on Rudyard Kipling's book, Mowgli, an abandoned child raised by wolves, has his peaceful existence threatened by the return of the man-eating tiger Shere Khan (George Sanders). Facing certain death, Mowgli must overcome his reluctance to leave his wolf family and return to the "man village." But he is not alone on his quest: Aided by Bagheera the panther, and later by the carefree bear Balloo (Phil Harris), he braves the jungle's many perils.

Lego Robotics Workshop - grades 5-8

Come to the library for a chance to build or program a Lego Mindstorms EV-3 robot. You will work in teams to program a robot together to solve a maze or complete other tasks.

1000 Books Before Kindergarten

The Mill Valley Library invites you to share 1000 books with your children before they enter kindergarten. Yes really! You can do it!

This early literacy program can help give your kids a leg up when they enter school. Reading with your children every day boosts their learning potential by increasing vocabulary, extending their attention spans, and enhancing critical and imaginative thinking skills. It also promotes bonding between parent and child!
