Mill Valley Impacted by the North Bay Fires

North Bay fires in Sonoma, Napa, and Solano Counties have had a direct impact on our community. Approximately 29 City of Mill Valley employees in addition to teachers and staff in the Mill Valley and Tamalpais School Districts, and employees in businesses throughout town live in neighborhoods that have been evacuated, are on standby to evacuate, or are helping family evacuate or prepare to evacuate. The Fire and Police stations are staffed and operating, however, other non-public safety departments have staff absent due to the fires and some City services may be affected.

Since Monday, the Mill Valley Fire Department and Southern Marin Fire District have provided mutual aid to Sonoma County by supplying three Fire Department strike teams including Type 3 engines to aid in fire suppression and evacuation efforts. Additionally, the Mill Valley Police Department has supplied four Police officers to assist with evacuations. City of Mill Valley staff have offered services to the City of Santa Rosa for Building Inspectors and Public Information Officers when Santa Rosa sent out a request for assistance earlier this week.

On Wednesday night City of Mill Valley and Tamalpais High School Staff alongside the Southern Marin Fire District and Mill Valley CERT volunteers opened the Gus Gym at Tamalpais High School as an evacuation center in anticipation of evacuees from Sonoma County before being asked to “stand down” when evacuation orders were called off. The evacuation center at Tamalpais High School will remain staged as an evacuation center in the case that other facilities in the county reach capacity. The Office of Emergency Services (OES) has also identified the Seminary Campus in Strawberry as a possible evacuation center location. Please note that in the case that either of these locations are opened for evacuees there will be some impact to traffic and everyday business in Mill Valley.

Currently there are no evacuation orders for Mill Valley, Mt. Tamalpais or Marin County. The City of Mill Valley is continuing to work closely with the Marin County Office of Emergency Services to coordinate emergency response and evacuation efforts. For accurate local information stay tuned to the City website and our social media channels (Facebook, Nextdoor, Twitter) for updates.
