Holiday Safety

While celebrating this holiday season, we want you to have peace of mind that your property remains undisturbed and you return to it the way you left it. Here are some safety tips in order to have a cheerful and safe holiday season:

  1. Make your house appear as if someone was home, not empty. Consider having someone house sit for you.

  2. Lock all doors and windows at home. Leave the curtains open at normal use positions.

  3. Don’t allow deliveries of mail, newspaper, or packages to build up.  Arrange with the Post Office to hold your mail, or ask for a friend/neighbor to take them in regularly.

  4. Ask a neighbor to park in your driveway when you are away so it appears that someone is home.

  5. If you have a home alarm system, use it!  Make sure security alarms and cameras are functioning and monitoring your home.

  6. Don’t post on social media about your trip. Doing so will bring unwanted attention to your property and alert the public that you are away.

  7. Lock vehicles and remove any valuables.

  8. Record serial numbers of electronics and bicycles so if they are stolen and recovered, returning the items can be easier.

  9. If there are valuables you can’t live without, consider placing them in a safety deposit box at a bank.

  10. Don’t leave lights on 24/7 while away thinking that will trick potential burglars. Not only will your electric bill skyrocket, but this also possesses a fire hazard. Instead utilize timers for lights to go on and off.

  11. Never leave keys hidden outside of your home under doormats, flower pots, etc.

  12. Check out the MVPD’s webpage at, under “Community Services” to submit a request for extra patrols while you are away.
