2018 Board, Commission and Committee Vacancies - Application Period Open

Application Deadline: Thursday, January 25, 2018 at 5:00 p.m.

The Mill Valley City Council is seeking applicants to serve, contribute and to utilize the top talent that exists among the residents of the community for the City’s various Boards, Commissions and Committees. New terms begin March 1st for a three-year period (unless noted otherwise). Members may serve no more than two consecutive terms. These appointments are made by the City Council and serve without financial compensation. Applications can be found on the City's website at www.cityofmillvalley.org/vacancies.

ARTS COMMISSION - Two members’ terms are expiring (both incumbents are eligible to reapply). The Commission arranges exhibits at City Hall and the Community Center, sponsors concerts in the Plaza as well as the annual ‘Click Off’ Photography Event. This is a hands-on working group that coordinates special artistic events along with its monthly “First Tuesday Art Walk.” The Commission needs task-oriented, focused members committed to community outreach. Meetings are the second Tuesday evening of each month. Please note that the openings are available to individuals who live outside of City limits but within the Mill Valley School District.

BICYCLE AND PEDESTRIAN ADVISORY COMMITTEE – Three members’ terms are expiring and of those, two incumbents are eligible to reapply. The purpose of this Committee is to recommend bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure improvements and updates to the City Council. Meetings are held approximately every other month at City Hall. Please note that one opening is available to individuals who live outside of City limits but within the Mill Valley School District.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS COMMISSION – One member has resigned from the Commission and the City needs to fill the unscheduled vacancy. The Commission advocates the need for ongoing emergency preparedness and helps identify, organize and liaison with neighborhoods, businesses, and schools. They assist with educating residents on ways to be self-sufficient in a disaster and encourage CERT training. Meetings are the second Thursday of every month at City Hall. Please note that the opening is only available to residents who reside within City limits.

LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES - Two members' terms are expiring and both are eligible to reapply. This advisory board meets on the second Thursday evening of every month. Trustees advise the City Librarian on matters related to the Library, advocate for the Library, and make reports to City Council. Please note that one opening is available to individuals who live within City limits.

MARIN COUNTY COMMISSION ON AGING - No current vacancies.

PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION - Two members’ terms are expiring and one incumbent is eligible to reapply. This five member Commission meets on the first Wednesday evening of each month at City Hall to review issues pertaining to City parks, recreation facilities, and equipment. The Commission also studies the City’s tree planting and replacement program. Please note that one opening is available to individuals who live outside of City limits but within the Mill Valley School District.

PLANNING COMMISSION – No current vacancies.

MARIN/SONOMA MOSQUITO AND VECTOR CONTROL DISTRICT - California’s Mosquito Abatement Act of 1915 allowed groups of communities faced with serious mosquito problems to form their own regional abatement organization as an "independent special district", separate from other government agencies. The Marin-Sonoma Abatement District was launched at that time, the first in the State. The City Council is accepting applications from residents interesting in representing Mill Valley on this Board. Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of every other month at the district office in Cotati.

PLEASE NOTE that interviews will be held before the City Council’s February, 2018 meetings. Applicants will be contacted after the January 25th deadline to finalize interview details. Final appointments will be made prior to the start of the new terms in March, 2018.
