2018 Reading Challenge: The Mill Valley Public Library Joins PBS for The Great American Read!

The Mill Valley Public Library is one of 50 libraries nationwide and the only library in California to win a grant from ALA for PBS’s The Great American Read, a nationwide hunt to find America’s best-loved books.

Read from the 100 Best-Loved Books list, vote for your favorites on social media using #GreatReadPBS @millvalleylib, and join us for our awesome events.

Reading Challenge: Play The Great American Read Book Bingo! | Tuesday May 22nd - Tuesday October 23rd

Read from PBS’s 100 Best-Loved books list and fill in your bingo sheet for a chance to win prizes including a literary-themed gift basket, merchandise from Out of Print, beautiful hardcover books, and more. Open to adults and teens.

Literary Pen Pals | May 22nd -

We'll pair you up with a fellow reader from one of our partner libraries in Maine, North Carolina, Missouri, Montana, New York, New Mexico, and Texas. Connect with someone new as you exchange short handwritten letters about the 100 Books. You’ll get a packet with everything you need to get started: customized stationery and envelopes, a pen, and playful prompts. The Library is your post office: drop off and collect your mail, and the postage is on us. Find the details here.

Longest Table Literary Picnic | Saturday August 11th | 1:00pm - Hauke Field

Save the date! We're hosting a literary picnic for all those interested in The Great American Read. We'll gather together at Hauke Field to share food and conversation over the longest picnic table you've ever seen! Rotate around the themed-tables as you chat about books from the challenge.

Author Panel Discussion moderated by Michael Krasny | Friday, September 7th | 7pm - Main Reading Room, Mill Valley Public Library

4 esteemed Bay Area authors and booksellers debate the merits of the 100 Books list; delving into their personal favorites and connections to books from the list, as well as books which were left out that they feel should have been included. KQED's Michael Krasny will moderate the panel. Adults and high school students.

Series Finale Live Screening Party | Tuesday, October 23rd | 7pm

We'll celebrate the end of our reading challenge and the PBS series with food, a final raffle, top-10 ballot predictions, and a live broadcast of the series finale as PBS counts down the top 10 books to reveal America's #1 best loved novel.

Past events:

Series Premiere Screening and Kick-Off Party | Tues. 5/22 | 6:00pm

Join us for a special screening of the premiere episode of PBS' Great American Read.

We'll be serving small bites, wine, and sweets starting at 6:00 pm. Entertainment includes book trivia and dramatic readings of glowing and scathing reviews of books on the Top 100 list. Did we mention fabulous prizes? We'll leave just enough time for some casual literary mingling before settling in for a communal viewing at 7:00 pm.

Stay for part of all of the program. You'll also be able to pick up your Book Bingo sheet and/or join our Literary Pen Pals program if you're interested.
