On Tuesday, August 7th 2018, the Mill Valley Police Department is asking neighborhoods throughout Mill Valley to participate in this year’s “35th Annual National Night Out” (NNO) event. NNO was introduced in 1984 by the National Association of Town Watch to “Provide community watch groups the necessary resources and assets to stay informed, interested, involved, and motivated within the community.”This event is celebrated throughout the United States and is focused on building relationships between the community and law enforcement. The purpose is to bring unity to neighborhoods to help prevent crime and establish a safe community.
During NNO, Mill Valley residents are encouraged to lock their doors, turn on exterior lights, and spend the evening talking with neighbors and public safety officials. Neighborhood events can include an ice cream social, BBQ, block parties and more. Participating neighborhoods can decide how to best organize an event that best suits their community. Members of the MVPD will be stopping by each event to talk with members of the community. NNO lets criminals know that Mill Valley shares the common goal of keeping our wonderful city a safe and prosperous place to live.
We are looking forward to making this an annual event for years to come in Mill Valley. If your neighborhood wants to participate please commit to hosting an event by Friday July 20, 2018. If your event includes a street closure, you must contact Mill Valley’s Public Works Department for a permit. For questions regarding NNO and to confirm that you will be hosting an event, contact Mill Valley Community Services Officer Chris DeLaTorre or call 415-389-4100. We look forward to seeing you out there!
