City Manager Announces Appointment of Police Chief

City Manager Jim McCann has named Alan E. Piombo Jr. Police Chief, effective February 4, 2019, to fill the vacancy created by Chief Angel Bernal’s retirement in 2017.

Alan Piombo was selected after an exhaustive search and competitive process. With input from two panel interviews with community leaders and law enforcement professionals, as well as one-on-one interviews with City Manager McCann, newly appointed Chief Piombo stood out as a leader who would mesh well with the community, City management team and the Police Department.

Piombo’s law enforcement career started with the City of San Rafael in 1991 where he steadily rose through the ranks and served the past ten years as a lieutenant. He holds an Associate in Science degree from Santa Rosa Junior College, a Bachelor of Arts in Management and a Master of Arts in Leadership from Saint Mary’s College of California in Moraga.  Chief Piombo is a native of the North Bay, having been raised and attended local schools in Cotati.  He now resides in Rohnert Park with his wife Gretchen and their five children.

Announcing the appointment, City Manager Jim McCann commended Piombo for his proven leadership and extensive professional background.  “I am excited to work with someone as qualified and talented as Alan Piombo and believe he will be an excellent fit for the Mill Valley community.  We look forward to working with him in the years ahead,” said McCann.

As a lieutenant in San Rafael, Piombo managed all major units of the San Rafael Police Department at various times and has built valuable relationships within the Marin law enforcement community over his nearly three decades of service. His career is highlighted by developing innovative programs, community policing initiatives and excellence in recruitment and training of high-quality personnel. He brings his accomplishments and over 17 years of supervisory and management experience to Mill Valley where he will lead a department of 30 professionals, including twenty-two sworn officers, and will oversee all aspects of the Police Department.
