On Sunday, September 15, 2019, at 6:00 AM a Deputy with the Marin County Sheriff’s Department located an unresponsive man sitting in the driver’s seat of a Mercedes Benz at 789 Redwood Hwy Frontage Road in Mill Valley. The Mercedes Benz had collided with a parked vehicle and the driver was not responsive. The Deputy saw a handgun laying partially exposed on the front passenger seat within reach of the driver.
Officers from Mill Valley Police responded to the scene with additional Marin County Deputies, Central Marin Officers, and the California Highway Patrol. The Officers and Deputies attempted to make contact with the driver over the course of approximately 3 hours. During this time the driver would wake and would move about the vehicle but would not respond to Officers commands.
The Central Marin Police Special Response Team was activated, and the Marin County Sheriff’s Office Drone Team arrived to assist. The Drone was used to see inside the vehicle and monitor the driver’s movements. At approximately 9:00 AM, prior to the Special Response Team deploying, the driver slowly began to follow Officer’s commands and was taken into custody without further incident. A loaded handgun was recovered inside the vehicle.
The driver was identified as Garrett McGriff, age 35, out of Santa Rosa, CA. McGriff was arrested for being a felon in possession of a firearm, a felon in possession of ammunition, possession of suspected heroin, and possession of suspected MDMA (commonly known as ecstasy).
