Around 8:30 am on Tuesday, November 26, a spill of muriatic acid was discovered inside a pool maintenance room by Tamalpais High School maintenance staff and reported immediately to the authorities.
The Mill Valley Fire Department, in coordination with the Mill Valley Police Department, Southern Marin Fire Protection District, and the Marin County Hazmat Team responded to the incident.
The spill was contained to the building of origin, and authorities asked that community members within .5 mile of Tamalpais High School shelter in place until notified. The school was not in session, due to the Thanksgiving break. There were no road closures, but residents were encouraged to avoid the area.
The Marin County Hazmat Team was able to mitigate the acid and turned the incident over to the Tamalpais High School for further cleanup. The shelter in place was canceled at 12:00 pm.
