Ralph Andersen & Associates, the firm retained by the Mill Valley City Council to lead the recruitment process for our new City Manager, has announced that applications are now open and will close on March 30, 2020.
In October 2019, former Mill Valley City Manager Jim McCann announced he would retire in February 2020. In the months following McCann’s retirement announcement, Council hired Ms. Heather Renschler of Ralph Andersen & Associates to conduct a national executive search for a new City Manager. At McCann’s recommendation, Council appointed Mill Valley Police Chief, Alan Piombo, as acting City Manager during the interim period until a new City Manager begins leadership later this year.
As part of the recruitment process, Ms. Renschler met with City Council, Department Heads, and key City Staff to get input on the requirements for the role. The City held a community meeting, led by Ms. Renschler, on February 10, 2020 to solicit input from community members about what they are looking for in the next City Manager. Approximately 15 community members attended the meeting, and shared with Ms. Renschler the attributes and qualities they are seeking, as well as top community issues and priorities. Ms. Renschler also invited comments and feedback via email, with collection of email comments closing on March 2, 2020.
After close of the recruitment application process on March 30, 2020, Council will review the list of applications on April 8, 2020. Two rounds of interviews will then be conducted from mid to late April 2020. The target timeframe for approval of the City Manager contract is mid-May 2020 at the open session of City Council on May 18, 2020, after which the new City Manager is expected to commence leadership this summer.
