The City of Mill Valley is installing a camera at the intersection of Camino Alto and Miller Avenue to control traffic movement at the intersection. The new traffic camera will detect thepresence of vehicles and ensure that the signals operate properly. In the past, traffic movement was controlled with traffic sensors placed under the roadway.
This intersection is receiving a traffic camera due to upcoming work on the sewer lines in the area, which will damage the in-road sensors. These cameras do not record video. The images captured by the camera are sent to a data processor which detects vehicles in the roadway.
The resolution of the image produced by these cameras is not good enough to read license plates or distinguish features of the driver.
Many local municipalities have converted from in-ground sensors to traffic cameras. They are more cost effective, as they get damaged less often, are quicker and less expensive to install, and they are easy to replace when needed.
