The Mill Valley Police Department has received recent reports of people claiming to be police officers or other government officials over the phone in order to obtain payments from a victim. Sometimes the scammers use actual names or manipulate their caller ID to appear legitimate.
Things a scammer might do:
If you receive a call like this, hang up immediately. Then call the agency to verify the claims. Do not wire any funds or make any payments until you have verified with the actual agency or department.

The Police Department will never notify a person about a warrant over the phone. Like most government agencies, you will receive an official summons through the mail on police letterhead. The Police Department will never threaten you or demand payment over the phone. If someone calls you claiming to be an officer and demands payment or threatens arrest, hang up. Then call the Police Department at 415-389-4100.
