Fires just happen. There is no avoiding them; accidents are a part of life here in the city of Mill Valley as well as anywhere else. So what can be done? We can identify some common causes of fires and what can be done to avoid an accident. We can also make sure everyone in the household knows what to do if there is a fire.
BBQ- As the weather gets better, the BBQs come out. Be sure to keep them away from the eves and siding of your house. Also keep the children and pets away to avoid knocking it over.
Appliances- Another leading cause of fires in homes is simply poor maintenance of household appliances. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for cleaning and maintaining dryers, heaters, ranges and any other appliances.
Electrical- Don’t overload your home’s circuits. Avoid: plugging power strips into other power strips and using extension cords for permanent appliances
Call 911- In the event of a fire, every second counts. Get us on the way by ensuring that someone calls 911 right away.
Fire Extinguishers- An easy way to make your home safer is to purchase a fire extinguisher and keep it in a known/accessible location. Check out the diagrams below for the proper selection and use of a fire extinguisher.
Evacuate- If the fire seems too big or won’t go out, close the door and leave the house. Firefighters will be there quickly.
