International Walk to School Day

International Walk to School Day is an event in which millions of children from communities in over 40 countries around the world participate. Walk to School Day in the United States of America began in 1997 as a one-day event aimed at building awareness for walkable communities. Pedestrian safety and promoting healthy active lifestyles are two additional goals of the global program. Because so much interest has been generated worldwide in participating countries, there is actually a push to a make the month of October “International Walk to School Month”.

On Wednesday, October 4th, 2017, the City of Mill Valley will be represented by Old Mill School in this global campaign for greater awareness of safe routes to school for children year round. Old Mill School will have a large group of students gathering at Depot Plaza at 8:00 AM with an 8:10 AM departure. Approximately 100 to 125 students from Old Mill School will participate in this event.

The Mill Valley Police Department wants to remind drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians to respect and share the road. Traffic delays are expected due to the increased number of students either walking or riding their bicycles in the area. Please plan accordingly or use alternate routes if applicable.
