It’s film festival season in Mill Valley! The Mill Valley Film Festival (MVFF) officially kicked off last night, and this year marks a very special occasion – the Festival’s 40th anniversary. In celebration of this milestone, the Mill Valley Public Library collaborated with the California Film Institute, the nonprofit which produces the MVFF, to add more than 600 photographs, posters, souvenir guidebooks, and other ephemera to our Lucretia Little History Room (LLHR).
You can view much of the collection through the LLHR’s Online Collections Database, Mill Valley History Online. Visit the Mill Valley Film Festival Collection page here, then click on categories such as “Tributes & Spotlights,” “Staff & Volunteers” and “Behind the Screens”. View your favorite actors, filmmakers, and the people and events that have helped to grow the MVFF from a small three-day showcase to an internationally renowned “filmmakers’ festival”.
Explore more of the collection in the History Room, and visit the Library’s lower-level gallery space to view a new photo exhibition, “Scenes from the Mill Valley Film Festival”. On display through November, the exhibition features a selection of highlights from 40 years of the Festival. We invite you to view the exhibition during a special reception event on Tuesday, October 10th from 5-7pm.
The History Room’s mission is to illuminate the unique and vibrant history of Mill Valley. The Library is happy to have the opportunity to help preserve and showcase the history of the MVFF, which has played a significant role in Mill Valley’s cultural life. We ask you to help us continue documenting the Festival’s history by filling in holes in the collection. If you have MVFF photographs or other memorabilia that you would be willing to share, please visit us in the History Room or contact firstname.lastname@example.org. In particular, we’re looking for materials from the Festival’s earliest years.
The Library thanks the California Film Institute and the Ken and Jackie Broad Family Fund for their support of this collection.
