The City of Mill Valley, working with Bill Higgins and the artist Chuck Oakander, added the third Big Wave bench down the first base line of Boyle Minor Field in Boyle Park. The Henry Higgins Memorial Bench was inspired by Henry’s love of Mill Valley. Bill, Henry’s Dad, said that some of Henry’s fondest memories before his passing were playing on the fields of Mill Valley. Bill wanted to give Mill Valley a lasting memory of the joy that Henry experienced on those fields and is very happy that the new bench was installed before the start of games at Boyle. Bill hopes that the bench will be used by the many families of Mill Valley to enjoy little league games.
Bolinas resident, and famous artist, Chuck Oakander's Big Wave bench is over 16 feet long and made of Monterey Cypress. Mr. Oakander said the wood calls to him and lets him know how it wants to be shaped. Director of Arts and Recreation, Sean McGrew, said that this was a wonderful example of the City working with its residents to create functional art, beauty and lasting memories. He also wanted to thank the City of Mill Valley Department of Public Works, for without them, the installation of this bench wouldn’t have been possible.
This third Big Wave Bench is the latest addition to the City of Mill Valley Art in Public Places program.
