Share your stories about the Muir Woods enclave where Alan Watts, Elsa Gidlow and other literary luminaries once lived. Or come and listen as others discuss this unique bohemian community. Author and former Druid Heights resident Hallie Iglehart Austen will moderate.
This event is an occasion for those who lived in or spent time at Druid Heights to come together and share memories. In particular, we’re looking for first-hand stories ranging from the early days of Druid Height’s formation in the 1950s through to 2001, the year Druid Heights’ co-founder, Roger Somers, passed away. If you don’t have first-hand stories from that time period, please join us to listen in! This event is also a chance for those just discovering Druid Heights to learn more about this counterculture landmark. The event will begin with a brief slideshow by Mia Monroe of the National Park Service, providing a visual overview of Druid Heights.
Registration recommended. If you plan to attend and tell a story about your time at Druid Heights, please indicate so on the registration page. We want to ensure that all the stories get told.
The Library will archive an audio recording of this event in the Lucretia Little History Room so that future visitors and researchers can also learn more about Druid Heights. If you plan to tell a story at the event but do not want your story to be recorded, please make sure to let a staffer know.
About our moderator:
Hallie Iglehart Austen lived part-time at Druid Heights from the mid-’70s to the mid-’80s and was a full-time resident from 1984-85. She found a spiritual grandmother in Elsa Gidlow, meeting some of the elders whose books she had carried in her backpack in the early ’70s across Asia: Lama Govinda, Li Gotami, R.H. Blythe and others. Hallie continues the lineage of the Yule Log ceremony initiated by Elsa nearly 80 years ago with the original Yule Log. Hallie has been teaching and writing about Womanspirit and the Goddess since 1974 and is the author of Womanspirit: A Guide to Women’s Wisdom (1983—partially written at Druid Heights) and The Heart of the Goddess: Art, Myth and Meditations of the World’s Sacred Feminine (1990, new edition October 2018). She is the co-founder of Seaflow: Protect Our Living Oceans and founder of All One Ocean: Making Everyday Ocean Clean-Up Day.
