California has cut permit fees and streamlined planning requirements to convert a bedroom to a legal rental, labeled a Junior Accessory Dwelling Unit (or JADU, pronounced jay-doo). No additional parking spaces nor utility hookup fees are required for a JADUs. Attached ADUs also do not require utility hookup fees and some ADU, such as those units with a 1/2 mile of a transit stop, do not require parking. These units can be rental units that can bring in additional income for a single family home.
Want details? Just stop in at a free JADU Expo between 9 and 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 7 at Whistlestop, 930 Tamalpais Ave., San Rafael.
Learn about JADU conversions from architects, builders, planners, mortgage lenders and rental specialists, and get help on how to screen renters and how to write a rental contract.
The expo is jointly sponsored by AAI, the Aging Action Initiative; the Marin County Commission on Aging; and the Age Friendly Marin network.
Unable to attend? Another expo is scheduled from 9 to noon Saturday, March 30 at Novato City hall, 901 Sherman Ave.
