Public Hearing On Dual-Stream Recycling - Monday, May 20, 2019

On May 20, 2019, the City Council will hear a presentation on Mill Valley Refuse Service’s (MVRS) Dual-Stream Pilot Program and hold a public hearing to receive feedback from the community on the proposal to adopt the Dual-Stream method of recycling collection.

Dual-stream recycling is the method in which mixed paper is put into one can, and all other mixed recyclables are put into another can. According to MVRS, the Dual-Stream method will allow them to process more recyclables, lessen the carbon footprint for collection operations, and help stabilize collection rates.

MVRS conducted a pilot program of the new method from September to December 2018. MVRS reported approximately 95% participation during the pilot program but received mixed feedback from residents overall. The City Council will receive MVRS’ report and provide direction to staff on whether or not to pursue the Dual-Stream model moving forward.
