DEI Initiatives Update - October 19, 2020

Background - At the Monday, June 15, 2020 Council Meeting, the City Council approved an immediate action plan to address systemic racism and injustice in Mill Valley. The plan included the establishment of a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Task Force to review and develop additional actions, investigate best practices, and make specific recommendations to Council for next steps.
Since our last update on October 5, the following has taken place: 
DEI Task Force:

  • Task Force members have had orientation sessions
  • The Task Force held its first Working Session on October 15
  • At these meetings, the DEI Task Force has completed the following actions:
    • Introductions
    • Reviewed the DEI Task Force Mission, Goals, Expected Outcomes
    • Reviewed the proposed schedule
    • Reviewed the “Community Suggestions Report”
    • Discussed the format of DEI meetings 
    • Identified Work Groups - smaller groups working on specific issues
    • Introduced a standardized framework for creating recommendations
    • Launched initial Work Group sessions
  • The tentative schedule for the first public engagement meeting will be November 5. We will update the community when the schedule is set and how to participate 
  • The plan is to meet weekly and to develop a set of recommendations for Council by the first City Council meeting in December
  • The Task force will then decide on Phase 2 and Phase 3 DEI Task Force Strategies
  • In January - Launch Phase 2 DEI Initiatives

 DEI City-Wide Initiatives

  • Public Art - Perspectives: Past, Present, and Future: This community art project is still on the Downtown Plaza and will remain through October, weather permitting.  
  • Parks and Recreation Commission - On October 7, the Commission discussed two  DEI-related items: "Perspectives; Past, Present and Future" Public Art Update, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiatives Update. Watch the video. View the Slides
