City Manager Announces Appointment of Arts & Recreation Director

Mill Valley City Manager Alan Piombo announced at the Mill Valley City Council meeting on Monday evening the appointment of Sean McGrew to the position of Director of Arts and Recreation. McGrew stepped into the Interim Director role after former Director Jenny Rogers departed in early 2020.

“During his many years in Recreation, Sean has demonstrated visionary and collaborative leadership and the ability to lead and motivate staff, as well as working with a diverse workforce and community,” City Manager Piombo said. “Please join me in congratulating Sean on his promotion.”

“This past year completely upended the departments that offer in-person programming such as Recreation,” Mayor John McCauley said. “But under Sean’s leadership, we continued to serve our community with innovative Recreation and Arts programming to keep us connected and active. I want to thank Sean for his unflappable resilience through it all.”

Sean has over 40 years of recreation experience, which began at 14 years-old, cleaning pools and teaching swimming for San Francisco Recreation and Parks. Over his career, he has conducted, coordinated, supervised, or managed Aquatics, Early Childhood, Afterschool, Sports, Adult, Day Camps, Seniors, and Fitness programs. He has experience in business and administrative support and managing building maintenance. He has conducted a variety of training sessions for San Francisco Recreation and Parks, Mill Valley Recreation, and the California Parks and Recreation Society including Customer Service, Staff Development, program service models, and professionalism.

Over the past 16 months, as Interim Arts and Recreation Director, he has managed the Recreation Department’s response to the pandemic, providing emergency shelter for fire evacuees, and the re-envisioning of the City’s Arts and Recreation programs.

Sean attended San Diego State University and graduated from UC Santa Barbara with a BA in Political Science. In his off-hours, Sean enjoys scuba diving, surfing, travel, and travel photography, as well as a good book to read.
